Understanding the FFL Transfer Process

The Federal Firearms License (FFL) transfer is a vital process in firearm sales. It ensures that all transactions comply with federal regulations, promoting safe and responsible ownership. During this process, a licensed dealer will facilitate the background check and transfer of ownership, providing peace of mind to both seller and buyer. Understanding how FFL transfers work empowers you as a consumer and reinforces our commitment to responsible gun ownership.

You must:

  1. Be legally eligible to purchase and possess a firearm under federal and Florida law

  2. Have a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID (Florida driver license or Florida ID)

  3. Be able to complete a background check (unless you qualify for an exemption under Florida law)

Note: Florida firearm laws vary by situation. If you have questions about eligibility, residency, or documentation, contact us before placing your order.

SGW FFL Transfer Process

Here’s our straightforward approach to the FFL transfer process. We guide you through every step, ensuring clarity and a smooth experience.

Five Steps to a Smooth FFL Transfer

Five Steps to a Smooth Transfer

Step 1 — Confirm Your Documents Are Current

To complete your transfer smoothly, you’ll need:

  • A valid Florida Driver License or Florida ID with your current address

  • If your address is not current, bring valid supplemental documentation (ask us what’s acceptable)

  • If you’re purchasing a handgun, you must be 21 or older (federal law requires 21+ for handguns from an FFL)

If your documents are current, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2 — Purchase Your Firearm

The easiest transfer is the one you don’t need:

✅ Check Solid Gun Works inventory first (our web store). Buying directly from us eliminates extra shipping delays and the transfer process is faster.

If you buy from another retailer:

  • The firearm must ship from an FFL dealer (in most cases)

  • Confirm the firearm is legal in Florida and legal under federal law

  • Confirm the seller will include in the shipment:

    • A copy of their FFL

    • Your name and phone number on the invoice/packing slip (so we can match it to you)

    • Provide your contact information to Solid Gun Works via email (name, email and phone)

Step 3 — Send the Seller Our FFL Info

Some sellers request our license before shipping.

When ordering, provide the seller with Solid Gun Works’ FFL shipping information and have them contact us for our license copy.

📩 FFL Email: ffl@solidgunworks.com

📞 Phone: 863-322-5000

Important: We only send our FFL to the shipping dealer, not to individual customers.

Step 4 — Wait for Arrival + Processing

Once the firearm arrives:

  • We log it into our system

  • We confirm it matches your order

  • We will contact you using your contact information provided by you or the seller when it’s ready for pickup

Transfers are completed during store business hours. Our Store business hours are by appointment only.

Step 5 — Pick Up Your Firearm

When you come in, you will:

  • Provide your Government Issued ID, preferably your Florida ID or Driver License. (including your Florida Concealed Weapon License)

  • Complete ATF Form 4473.

  • Complete the required Florida background check process (FDLE)

  • Pay the transfer fee ($45 per firearm)

You may take possession only after the transfer is approved and all requirements are satisfied.

Florida note: If you are not a Concealed Weapon License Holder, you will be subject to a waiting period. If you have a Florida Concealed Weapon License (CWL), you may qualify for exemptions. If you have any questions, please ask us before you arrive for Step 5.

What Can Go Wrong? (And How to Avoid It)

FFL transfers connect the transferor and transferee through a licensed dealer. The process usually involves submitting the necessary forms and payment. Generally, your dealer will guide you through what’s required, ensuring compliance with all regulations.

Each transfer may take a few days, depending on the dealer’s workload and whether there are any complications. Typically, you can expect a straightforward transfer to complete within a week after your firearms arrives at Solid Gun Works.

For an FFL transfer, you will generally need to provide a valid photo ID, proof of residence, and any required paperwork related to the firearm you are transferring. If you have a Florida Concealed Weapon License, that will expedite the transfer process.  You’ll be able to take home your new firearm the same day.

You can usually track your FFL transfer status by contacting the dealer where you purchased your firearm. They will provide you shipping and tracking information.  Once your firearms arrives at Solid Gun Works, we will contact you to let you know when you can complete your paperwork and background check. We typically contact you via email within 48 hours of the firearm arriving at our shop.

Transfer fees are $45 per firearm which includes the FDLE background check fees.

What Can Go Wrong? (And How to Avoid It)

The firearm arrives, but your ID or eligibility doesn’t match.

Examples: expired ID, wrong address, out of state ID / not a Florida resident, or you fail to pass the FDLE background check.

That can result in:
• Return shipping fees
• Restocking fees from the seller
• Storage fees if the firearm is left unclaimed

Fix: confirm your documents and eligibility before ordering.

Common issues:

  • No paperwork in the box

  • No name/phone number included

  • Shipping from a non-FFL when the seller requires FFL-to-FFL shipping

Fix: ensure the seller includes your info and sends from an FFL.

Example: handgun purchase when under 21, or a configuration that creates a legal problem under federal rules.

Fix: if you’re unsure, call us first — we’ll help you avoid an expensive mistake.
